The Voice of His Gremlin

“You’re not serving us”

It feeds on the lazy part of me that doesn’t want to put the work in and it’s starved by a kind of madness; which is ‘if it doesn’t matter to anyone else it matters to me’ and I’m going to support it anyway. You can only focus on what matters to you, and that makes you vulnerable.

It’s the most judgemental version of whichever voice I’m supposed to be representing. It tells me I don’t know what I’m talking about, I haven’t got it right and I’m not doing enough.

There are all sorts of things I feel fallible about. How do we hold all those truths to do with our own personal challenges as a human being within our work as an artist?

… I don’t know the answer to that, but I try to include all of those things in my work. Who I am as a person, with all of my makeup, is necessary for me as an artist.

To be an artist is going to pose challenges to your ego.

I was told by the director Declan Donovan … “if you’re not afraid, then you’re mad”. It is naturally terrifying to stand up in front of people and try to connect so many people with whatever skill you have and you’re open to judgement, ridicule and opinions that might not serve what you’re trying to do. You’re vulnerable.

My difference is my artistry.

It’s an act of love to stand up in front of an audience and to share something and to try and communicate. I wouldn’t want to get rid of my Gremlins. If properly harnessed, they can push you to do what you do with more love.

One has to take action, but this is a terrifying thing

Let clarity and purpose be the victor.

The doubts are there to be worked with, not to be afraid of, not to  be cast as someone else; to know they are your own doubts and work with them.
